THE PHOENIX NEIGHBORHOOD COLLECTION

Sunnyslope.

Mountain landmarks.
A neighborhood of its own.

There’s more to Sunnyslope than the S on the hillside. Think sushi on Central, barbecue on 7th Street, artists opening their studios and a basketball team worth cheering for. Explore the places and homes that give this part of Phoenix its own story.

Where to find Sunnyslope.

Sunnyslope sits north of Northern Avenue, with 19th Avenue to the west and North Mountain and the eastern foothills shaping its northern and eastern edges. This guide uses an approximate community outline; local descriptions also refer to Cactus Road and 16th Street.

The original Sunny Slope subdivision was smaller: Central Avenue to 3rd Street, between Alice and Dunlap. Today, a neighborhood visit can take you from those streets toward foothill homes and mountain views. Sunnyslope has its own identity, separate from the Central Avenue area farther south.

02 / HISTORY IN THE STREETSCAPE

The S on the hill is just the beginning.

Look up at the hillside S, then head to Hatcher Road for the story behind it. Sunnyslope began as a subdivision in 1911 and joined Phoenix in 1959. The Sunnyslope Historical Society & Museum, at 737 E. Hatcher Road, brings that local history into focus through exhibits and community activities.

The hillside S is a familiar landmark. Houses built after World War II are another part of Sunnyslope’s story. For buyers, a home’s age is just a starting point. Check its upkeep, repairs and any official historic status.

Explore the local record through the Sunnyslope Historical Society.

A quick look at the homes.

Older cottages, ranch houses and individual modern designs are part of Sunnyslope’s mix. A visit can take you from flatter street-grid lots to the eastern foothills around Ocotillo Hills.

As you explore, notice the floor plans, outdoor space and views that catch your eye. The neighborhood name covers different settings, so choose a few streets to visit rather than judging it from one listing.

04 / PLACES THAT MAKE IT LOCAL

Bowling, coffee and a little local history.

An afternoon in Sunnyslope could include bowling at Let It Roll, a stop at the museum or coffee at Little O’s. These places give you a feel for everyday life beyond a home’s listing photos. Nearby labels identify stops outside this guide’s area.

05 / OUTDOORS & DAILY LIFE

A park afternoon or a mountain outing.

For an afternoon closer to home, look at Sunnyslope Community Center and park at 802 E. Vogel Avenue. Norton Park sits on Hatcher, Palma Park on Dunlap and Acacia Library at 750 E. Townley Avenue. Check the City calendar for classes, library activities and seasonal pool access.

Mountain access needs a more specific destination than “near North Mountain.” Maricopa Trailhead is at 10600 N. 7th Street. The North Mountain Visitor Center is farther north at 12950 N. 7th Street and is a different facility. As of October 2026, Phoenix announces that North Mountain Park will close from December 2026 through early 2028 for renovations. Check the current City notice before planning a visit; other preserve entrances have their own access information.

Make a day of your neighborhood visit.

Start around Central and Dunlap with a look at Sushi Friend’s menu. Stop by the Sunnyslope Museum on Hatcher to learn the local story, or plan bowling at Let It Roll.

For another outing, check North Mountain Brewing’s music and trivia calendar. In October, look for the studio tour and community-center Halloween event. For a mountain trip, check the City’s renovation and access notices first.
